DON'T FORGET YOUR FAIR ENTIRES!!!

Just a friendly reminder your 2008 Clearfield County Fair entries are due by Friday, July 18, 2008.

If using the 4-part forms, please submit the white copy to the Fair Office and submit the canary yellow copy to the Extension Office. Please use these forms for Department 10 (4-H) only.

Also, if you are participating in the 2008 Clearfield County Jr. Livestock & Poultry Sale - please be trying to get new buyers. Additional tickets and brochures can be picked up in the Extension Office!

4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest Results


On Tuesday, June 3rd at 6:30 p.m. Clearfield County hosted the 17th Annual Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest in the Hiller Auditorium of Penn State University – DuBois Campus. The event was open to all Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson County 4-H members, ages 8 through 18, as of January 1st. 11 youth members from Clearfield & Jefferson Counties participated in four categories, including Senior Division Public Speaking, Junior Division Public Speaking, Senior Division Presentations, & Junior Division Presentations.

This year, topics included how to raise kittens, hiking preparation, summer cooking, the Clearfield County Fair, peer pressure, gerbils, understanding the present through stories of the past, and the positive influence of the 4-H program. Individuals entering into the Public Speaking contest where asked to give a 4 to 7 minute original talk on any topic. Participants in this category were only allowed to use note cards; no other illustrative material was allowed to be used. Individuals entering into the Presentation contest where asked to conduct a presentation about a 4-H project, hobby, or activity they have been involved with. Junior Division participants were given up to 8 minutes for their presentation and Senior Division participants were given between 10 and 12 minutes for their presentation.

In the Public Speaking Senior Division competition, Rachel Syktich, a member of the Clearfield County 4-H Dairy Club, received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Rachel is the daughter of Paul & Jackie Syktich of DuBois. Second place honors went to Abby Dressler of the Open Range 4-H Club, who received a $15.00 monetary award. Abby is the daughter of Michael & Tania Dressler of Rockton. Chelsea Folmar received third place and a $10.00 monetary award. Chelsea is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg.

In the Senior Division Presentation competition, Kathleen Thomas of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Kathleen is the daughter of Pamela Thomas of Morrisdale.

In the Public Speaking Junior Division Contest, Megan McGarry of the Hepburnia Methodist 4-H Club received first place. Megan is the daughter of Chris and Holly McGarry of Grampian.

In the Junior Division Presentation Contest, Kimberly Ward of the Free Spirit 4-H Club took home first place. Kimberly is the daughter of Shawn & Laurie Ward of Morrisdale. Second place went to the team of Mary Betts & Jared Turner, both of the Free Spirit 4-H Club. Mary is the daughter of Dan & Sue Betts of Hawk Run and Jared is the son of Alan & Michelle Turner of Morrisdale. Kestrel Merritt, also of the Free Spirit 4-H Club, took home third place. Kestrel is the daughter of Sara Merritt of Morrisdale. Amberley Spicher of the Gateway 4-H Club received fourth place honors. Amberley is the daughter of Marty & Sherri Spicher of Punxsutawney. Each junior division participant received a 4-H messenger or duffle bag.

All participants received a certificate of achievement and a ribbon.

Two local individuals served as judges for this year’s contest. Judges for event included Bob E. Day. Mr. Day has worked with radio for over 40 years and is currently employed with WOKW of Clearfield. Also serving as a judge was Kristin Mosch of Clearfield. Kristin was a former 4-H member that participated in numerous 4-H Public Speaking opportunities throughout her 11 year membership. She currently works as a legal secretary for the Law Offices of Belin, Kubista, & Ryan of Clearfield.
