SPEAK UP - Results of the 2010 Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest

On Tuesday, May 4th, Clearfield & Jefferson Counties hosted the 19th Annual Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest in the Hiller Auditorium of Penn State University – DuBois Campus. The event was open to all Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson County 4-H members, ages 8 through 18, as of January 1st. 9 4-H members from Clearfield & Jefferson Counties participated in one of four categories, including Senior Division Public Speaking, Junior Division Public Speaking, Senior Division Presentations, & Junior Division Presentations. This year, topics included opportunities through 4-H, the proper way to groom horses, protecting pets against ticks, reining horses, swine ear notching, caring for cats, and raising poultry.

In the Public Speaking Senior Division competition, Victoria Garner of the Clearfield County 4-H Hot Shots received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Victoria is the 16 year old daughter of Larry & Karen Garner of La Jose. Receiving second place was Fran McAninch of both the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club and the Open Range 4-H Club. Fran is the 15 year old daughter of Dan & Phyllis McAninch of DuBois. In the Senior Division Presentation competition, Kathleen Thomas of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Kathleen is the 17 year old daughter of Pamela Thomas of Morrisdale. All three young ladies also serve on the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council.

In the Junior Division Presentation Contest, Amanda Pennington of the Harmon 4-H Club received first place. Amanda is the 11 year old daughter of Faye Pennington of Cherry Tree. Amberley Spicher of the Gateway 4-H Club received second place honors. Amberley is the 11 year old daughter of Marty & Sherri Spicher of Punxsutawney. Third place went to Sydney Turner of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club. Sydney is the 10 year old daughter of Mark & Sally Turner of Philipsburg. In fourth place was Lauren Turner, also of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club. Lauren is the 8 year old daughter of Mark & Sally Turner of Philipsburg. Fifth place went to the team of Laura Lanager and Emma Potter, both of the Growing On 4-H Club. Laura is the 9 year old daughter of Cindy Lanager of Frenchville and Emma is the 10 year old daughter of Greg & Sharon potter of Frenchville. Each junior division participant received a 4-H bag filled with 4-H items. All participants in each category received a certificate of achievement and a ribbon. The competition was followed by refreshments and an awards ceremony.

Two local individuals served as judges for this year’s contest. Judges for event included Marlene Duttry and Rachel Syktich. Marlene was a former 4-H leader with the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club and served as volunteer for Clearfield County for 35 years. Marlene currently serves as the owner of At Home Realty Associates, Inc. and as the office manager & closing agent for Blakley & Jones, Attorneys at Law, both of DuBois. Marlene resides in DuBois with her husband Dan and they both enjoy showing and riding their registered Arabian horses. Rachel Syktich is the 20 year old of Paul & Jackie Syktich of DuBois. Rachel is a former Clearfield County 4-H member and currently serves as the Clearfield County Fair Queen. Since being crowned in August of 2009, Rachel has kept busy promoting agriculture by traveling and speaking at over 50 events throughout the county and state. She also continues to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network through the “Queens for Kids” organization. Rachel is a sophomore at DuBois Business College, where she is majoring in the Executive Assistant program with a minor in agriculture business.

Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship - Due August 1, 2010

Updates & Snapshots from 2010 PA 4-H Capital Days

4-H members from across the commonwealth met in Harrisburg for the 46th Annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Capital Days, an annual citizenship awareness event that was held April 25-27 at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers. Three 4-H members from Clearfield County were in attendance at this year’s event. Representing Clearfield County was Marissa Douthit, the 15 year old daughter of Tom & Janet Douthit of Punxsutawney, Abby Lee, the 16 year old the daughter of Albert & Glenda Lee of DuBois, and Liz McAndrew, the 16 year old daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway. All three of the delegates belong to the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club. The delegates were escorted to Harrisburg and chaperoned at the event by Jana Davidson, Children & Youth Development Educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension in Clearfield County.

The goal of the two-day program is to introduce 4-H’ers to Pennsylvania government through a series of hands-on, interactive experiences. Participants learned how laws are passed by participating in a mock legislative session. The youth are grouped into the majority and minority parties to discuss their party’s stand on the issues, and then come together as full house and vote on three bills that include issues such as cruelty to animals, restaurants display of dietary information, and prohibiting the administration of certain antimicrobial agents in animals. Other activities included hearing keynote speeches by Patrick Rushton, Education/Outreach Manager for Victims Resource Center, J.D. Dunbar, Chief Executive Officer of RULE (PA Rural Leadership Program, Representative Scott Conklin of Centre County, and Russell Redding, Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture. In addition to guest speakers and the mock legislative session, several workshops were provided on the topics of parliamentary procedure, how to read a bill, understand the rights of youth, spending plans, and citizenship & governmental affairs. All 4-H delegates were also given a tour of the Capitol Building and had their picture taken on the stairs of the Rotunda. At this program, 4-H members learn about local, state, and national governments through several opportunities during the program year. The program concluded on Tuesday, April 27th with a legislative breakfast. Representative Matt Gabler of Clearfield & Elk Counties attended the breakfast and invited the Clearfield County delegates on a tour of his office in the Capitol Building. Staff from the offices of Representative Sam Smith of Jefferson County, Representative Camille “Bud” George” of Clearfield County, and Senator and current Lieutenant Governor Joe Scarnati was also in attendance at the breakfast.

2010 Clearfield County Fair Entry Tips

The 2010 Clearfield County Fair Premium Books are now available! If you haven't received one in the mail, feel free to pick one up at either the Clearfield County Fair Office or the Extension Office. This year's Clearfield County Fair will take place on Monday, August 2 - Saturday, August 7, 2010! All 4-H/Department 10 Entries should be completed on a 4-part form. 4-part forms are available at the Extension Office. To make it easier on those doing filing entries for the Fair, please use a separate 4-part form for each different category such as swine, goats, sheep, horses, dairy, vegetables, etc.... All Clearfield County Fair entries must be received by the Clearfield County Fair Office by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010! No late entries will be accepted! Here are 10 tips to help you in completing your 2010 Clearfield County Fair Entry Blanks:

1. Obtain a copy of the 2010 Clearfield County Fair Premium Book (available at the Fair Office or Extension Office).

2. After you enter your 4-H projects, keep your premium books to use as a reference for animal weigh-in dates & times, animal show dates and times, superintendent contacts, and animal health rules and regulations.

3. Use a 4-part Entry Blank for ALL 4-H/Department 10 entries found on pages 41 through 49. On the 4-part forms: The White Copy goes directly to the Fair Office, a Canary Yellow Copy goes to the Extension Office, a Pink Copy goes to your 4-H Leader, and the Goldenrod Copy is for your records.

4. Let’s practice entering two (2) 4-H market swine. First, you go to pages 47 & 48 of the premium book. On the entry blank, where it asks for DEPARTMENT put the number 10. On the entry blank, where it asks for SECTION put 5A for market classes and 5B for fitting & showmanship. On the entry blank, where it asks for CLASS for Section 5A, please leave this blank, as you will be placed in your class after weigh-in. For Section 5B, select class 1-9 based on your age as of January 1st. CATEGORY can be left blank for this species (this is only needed to determine breeds or types). Then you will want to add a brief description under ANIMAL/ARTICLE (Example: Market Swine - Barrow). Finally, since you have two (2) animals you will repeat all the steps again!

5. Use a NEW 4-part Entry Form for all different sections you enter under 4-H Department 10 (Example: If you are showing both beef steer and lambs, one entry blank should list your Section 3 market beef classes along with your showmanship/fitting classes and a separate entry blank should list your Section 4 market lamb classes along with your showmanship/fitting classes.

6. If you are entering market animal classes, you will not know your weight class until weigh-in on Monday, August 2; therefore, the CLASS section of your entry can remain blank. After weigh-in, your animal(s) will be placed in the appropriate class.

7. Use a new entry blank for all different departments you enter. Please use a regular entry form located in the back of the premium book for all entries other than Department 10/4-H.

8. If you enter a 4-H project in the 2010 Clearfield County Fair, you should be completing the appropriate requirements in a 4-H project book.

9. Don’t forget about OPEN opportunities like Good Housekeeping (last section on each animal department), safe tractor driving contest for those ages 14-21 (page 92), and the Livestock Judging Contest for ages 8 to 19 (page 92).

10. Make sure your entry forms are received by the Clearfield County Fair & Park Board Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010.

2010 CLEARFIELD COUNTY ANNUAL 4–H AWARENESS WEEK WINDOW DISPLAY CONTEST

As you know, 4–H is a terrific experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity for youth between the ages of 8 and 18. Unfortunately, there are many individuals who are still unaware of all the positive aspects that the 4–H program has to offer. Therefore, Pennsylvania 4–H Awareness Week is a great opportunity for all 4–H clubs throughout Clearfield County to showcase the numerous benefits of the 4–H program by participating in the 2010 4-H awareness week window display contest, sponsored by the Clearfield County 4–H Youth Development Advisory Committee.

To compete in this year’s contest, have your club design and construct a window display in a participating local business (store, office, etc… ) in your community that promotes awareness of the 4–H program. Take photos of your window display and then submit them to the Extension Office by April 16, 2010.

This year, we have selected three (3) themes you can choose from:

“Meet the Future”
“4-H People Make it Happen”
“4-H’ers Make a Better Tomorrow”

Remember - creativity plays a big part in the judge’s decision!

Please note that this year’s Pennsylvania 4–H Awareness Week is Sunday, March 14 through Saturday, March 20, 2010. The first place 4–H club will receive $25.00, followed by $20.00 for second place, $15.00 for third place, and $10.00 for fourth place.

2010 Clearfield County 4-H Awards & Achievement program

The 2010 Clearfield County 4-H Awards & Achievement Program will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at the Curwensville Community Center in Curwensville, PA. This event is open to all 4-H members and their families, as well as 4-H Volunteer Leaders. Each 4-H family is asked to bring a covered dish to share with others and a $1.00 per person, which will go towards table service and decorations.

This program will recognize 4-H members that participated in county, district, regional, and state 4-H events in 2009, as well as Outstanding 4-H Club Officers, Outstanding 4-H Teen Leaders, and Outstanding 4-H Project Books for 2009. 4-H leaders and volunteers will also be recognized for their years of service and dedication to the Clearfield County 4-H program. A special 4-H Blue Ribbon Club Award will be distributed to the 4-H clubs that exhibits excellence in community service and 4-H participation.

If you will be attending, please call Jana at the Extension Office at (814) 765-7878 Ext. 3 by Friday, February 15 with the number in your family attending. Kindly RSVP by this date, so that we will be able to purchase enough supplies for this event.

WANTED! 4-H CAMP COUNSELORS

If you are between the ages of 15 and 18 as of January 1, 2010, you are eligible to serve as counselors at this year’s Regional 4-H Camp.

4-H Camp Counselor Application Packets have been sent to all 2009 counselors still eligible, as well as all 2009 CAT (Counselors at Training) participants. If you would like an application sent to you, please contact the Extension Office. All applications must be completed and returned to the Clearfield County Extension Office by Friday, February 19!

The 2010 Central Region 4-H Teen Retreat "Make a Difference: Imagine, Believe, Achieve" will take place on Friday, March 19 - Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Seven Mountain Boy Scout Camp (located 15 miles below State College on Route 322).

Clearfield County 4-H Horse Members Take Home Top Honors at 50th Annual PA State 4-H Horse Show

21 Clearfield County 4-H members recently participated in the 50th Annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show held at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg on Friday, October 23rd through Sunday, October 25th, 2009. This year, we had a total of 8 first place winners! Here are some snapshots of the first place award recipients!

Marissa Douthit & Leaguer’s Black TE and Francesca Varischetti & Shez Petitely Amazin took home first place in the Western Pleasure Pairs Class!

Katelyn Matthews & Painted Little Love Scene took home the blue ribbon in Pinto Yearling Fillies class!

Accept the Challenge....Be Part of the 2010 Leadership Academy!

Bungee jumping, sky diving, and public speaking make the list of top fears of individuals today; the things that make people sweat! But what do they have to do with leadership? To take a risk, or to undertake something that may make us uncomfortable, is an important part of living with passion. This isn’t to say that you have to run out and find the nearest sky diving school to enhance your leadership abilities. Risking can be as simple as looking at a situation where a decision is required and taking the road less traveled. Strong leaders know when they should follow a traditional path, and when looking at the big picture, a calculated risk could raise their team to the next level of efficiency or cohesion. As a leader, reflect on your own leadership situation and find some areas where a calculated risk may provide a breath of fresh air. Can you make a change in your decision making process? Develop a new product? Expend precious resources in a new, emerging area? Whatever the case may be for you, leave your comfort zone, check the situation and take the risk!

The Leadership Academy will once again be offered in 2010! Thanks to special funding, we offered the program to 13 teens from Clearfield & Jefferson counties this past year and focused on a variety of leadership-related topics including conflict resolution, citizenship, government, and group dynamics to name a few. “Full program” cost will range between $200 and $500 for each program participant but through special arrangements we will offer the course for $50.00 for first time enrollees. Graduates of The 2009 Leadership Academy may attend for $30.00.

The program will take place at the Foundry in Reynoldsville; however, we will likely meet at alternate sites (such as Penn State DuBois Campus) and our goal is to offer field trips related to our leadership topics. The first session will take place on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 and we will meet every-other Wednesday through April 21, 2010. The sessions will run from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Our focus will be students in grades 9 – 12; however, we will gladly accept mature teens in 7th & 8th grade! You DO NOT have to be a 4-H member to sign-up for the Leadership Academy. Last year, only 3 of the teen were 4-H members and the rest were students at Jeff Tech, so please inform your friends from school about this great opportunity to become better leaders!

Academy size is limited to 25 students. Become one of the elite members to participate in the Academy. As a member you will help determine the future direction for the Academy.

Benjamin D. Kline - 2009 Recipient of the Mary Fisher-Owens Memorial Trust Scholarship

Penn State Cooperative Extension of Clearfield County is pleased to announce that Benjamin D. Kline is the 2009 recipient of the Mary Fisher-Owens Memorial Trust Scholarship. Benjamin is the 18 year old son of Kevin and Christine Kline of Clearfield. Benjamin is a 2009 graduate of Clearfield Area High School, where he graduated with honors, and he is currently a freshman at Penn State University – DuBois campus, majoring in Animal Science. His future career goal is to become a large animal veterinarian.

Benjamin currently belongs to the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council, the Clearfield FFA Chapter, and the Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club, where he currently serves as club president. Over his years in the 4-H and FFA programs, Benjamin has made several contributions to both organizations. Benjamin helped implement the Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Master Showman Contest held during the Clearfield County Fair the past two years. Benjamin was a co-chairperson of the event this year, which is sponsored by Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council. For the past two years, Benjamin along with fellow 4-H teen council members, has been involved with Clearfield County’s Progressive Agriculture Safety Days and has helped organize and present the animal safety station each year. Benjamin actively participates in Clearfield County Fair and has held 4-H and FFA projects in the areas of beef steer, dairy cattle, and poultry. Benjamin received the honor of having the Grand Campion Market Beef Steer of the Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Livestock Show & Sale consecutively in 2008 and 2009.

Outside of his involvement with the 4-H and FFA program, Benjamin is an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church and was a past recipient of the Christian Leadership Award. While in high school Benjamin was active on the prom committee and Clearfield Bison Baseball Team.

“It has been a true honor having Benjamin as part of the 4-H program. Again and again, Ben has proven extreme dedication to all of his 4-H projects and responsibilities and is one of the hardest workers I know. The Mary Fisher-Owens Memorial Trust Scholarship is open to all Clearfield County residents entering into Penn State University’s College of Agriculture Sciences as full-time, first-semester freshman. Applications are available at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office and that deadline to apply is May 1st. The Mary Fisher-Owens Memorial Trust Scholarship is sponsored by Hazen Owens of Olanta and is based on the interest of a $10,000 trust fund.

Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club Members Participate in 4-H Equine Skill-a-thon

Three members of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club participated in the 4-H Equine Skill-a-thon held on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Ag Progress.

The Equine Skill-a-thon, which is co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association and Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences Cooperative Extension, is an annual event for 4-H members across the state to participate in. Three components make up the skill-a-thon including:

Identification Stations, which included any topics from 4-H horse project books
A Written Test, which was on general knowledge of horses, horsemanship, and related topics
Horse Judging, in which contestants judged one or two classes of 4 horses according to ideal conformation standards for the class

The skill-a-thon had 3 age categories: Junior Division for ages 8-11, Intermediate Division for ages 12-14, and Senior Division for ages 15-18. Grand Champion and Reserve Winners in each age Division won $200 and $100 savings bonds. Cash awards were given to individuals’ receiving1st trough 5th place. Entries were limited to 20 participants per division.

Representing the Clearfield County 4-H Program was three first time participants from the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club. The participants were Morgan Reardon, Violet Sleigh, and Sydney Turner, all of Philipsburg. Violet Sleigh placed 8th overall in the Junior Division (placing 1st in horse judging, 7th on the written test, and 10th on the identification stations). Sydney Turner placed 10th overall (placing 8th in horse judging, a 9th on the written test and 9th on the identification stations). Morgan Reardon placed 4th in horse judging and 10th on the written test.

All participants said the skill-a-thon was a great learning experience and would like to go back and take part in the program again next year!

E-DATA - 4-H Member & 4-H Volunteer Leader Enrollment for 2010

E-data (Extension Data System) is Penn State Cooperative Extension’s new information management system. This new system will take the place of the paper 4-H Member Enrollment and 4-H Volunteer Leader Enrollment Forms. In addition to adding your enrollment information, this system will help inform you about upcoming club, county, regional, and statewide 4-H programs. The system also allows you to register for these programs, as well as cancel your registration to a program or event if a conflict arises. This program will not only cut down on paper usage, but allow you to be notified about upcoming opportunities immediately. This is not a county or a regional database as it was originally designed, but it was adopted by the ENTIRE state of Pennsylvania as a way to enroll 4-H members and leaders. If you, as a 4-H Leader, have already enrolled in the system earlier this year, you have now been given 4-H club access! I encourage all of you to go into the system and become familiar with it! I hope to have ALL current 4-H members and leaders enrolled by January 1, 2010!

How to get started with e-data: First, visit the you will need to visit the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension website - http://clearfield.extension.psu.edu/ Second, you will need to click on the e-data link at the bottom left hand side of the webpage. Third, you will need to set-up a Friends of Penn State Account at https://fps.psu.edu, where you will be given a user name and password to log into the system at http://edata.extension,psu.edu/ Once you log-in, you can begin entering you information into the system including your contact information, 4-H club, 4-H projects, etc… (PLEASE NAVIGATE BY USING THE TABS AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN). Fourth, once you are finished entering items on a page, press the UPDATE button to save all your information. Remember, if 4-H members are in multiple clubs; please make sure to tell them to list themselves as a member in ALL the 4-H clubs they belong to. Leaders of multiple clubs should do the same!

Since this program is brand new and there are still some issues to work through, here is what is recommended for ALL 4-H Members & 4-H Leaders to do:

If you enrolled in e-data for 2009, you will now need to re-enroll for the 2010 year. To do this, click CARRY OVER on the top right hand side of the PROGRAMS Tab.
Complete as much information in the system as possible, then go to the PDF button on the top right hand side of the screen and print out the enrollment form. On the printed form, correct any errors or fill in any blanks that are shown. We have found that medical information has not moved to the PDF form, the 4-H member’s years in 4-H defaults to 1, and the parent signature is needed on the Code Agreement.
Ask all 4-H members to submit hard copies of this form to you (the Organizational Leader) along with their $10.00 Educational Material Fee for 2010. Then submit hard copies of your 4-H club’s enrollment to the Extension Office.

4-H Day with the Penn State Lady Lions - February 7, 2010

This year’s 4-H Day with Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Game will take place on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Penn State Lady Lions will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. A brochure with ticket order information was attached to the recent 4-H Fall Newsletter.

All tickets to this game are only $1.00 for 4-H members, leaders, and families. If you would like tickets to this event, please submit your complete order form to the Extension Office by Wednesday, November 25 along with your payment. All ticket orders will be sent to the appropriate contacts on each order form when they are when received by the Extension Office.

2010 Pennsylvania State 4-H Leadership Conference - "License to Lead"

Registration is now open for the 2010 Pennsylvania State 4-H Leadership Conference will be taking place Friday, January 29th through Sunday, January 31st at the Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center in State College. This year’s program is open to all Pennsylvania 4-H members between the ages of 13 and 18, as of January 1st. This year’s conference theme will be “License to Lead.”

The goal of this program is to provide a state level educational experience for Pennsylvania 4-H members that will build and enhance skills used throughout their 4-H careers and beyond. More information on this event, including a conference packet and schedule can be found on-line at:

Clearfield County 4-H members have been working hard over the past two months to prepare for the upcoming 50th Annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show, which will be taking place at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg beginning Friday, October 23rd through Sunday, October 25th. Clearfield County is proudly sending 21 4-H members to compete in this event. I am extremely proud of all the 4-H members that qualified. We have a very competitive district and qualifying for the state show is a huge accomplishment. I know Clearfield County will be very well represented this year and I wouldn’t be surprised if our members come home with many top places in their classes.

The 2009 Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show will be very special this year, as it will celebrate its 50th anniversary. In addition to the performance and production classes, numerous equine exhibits, clinics, and demonstrations have been planned, as well as look back to when the program began in 1959. As in the past, the 4-H members have been busy preparing stall decorations with a 1950’s inspired theme and are hoping to take home a good housekeeping award for their creativity, as well as their ability to keep their stabling area clean throughout the course of the show. Katie McAndrew, an eleven year member of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club, will be honored at the recognition ceremony on Saturday, October 24th for being named this year’s Pennsylvania Outstanding 4-H Horse Member. Katie is the daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway.

The 2nd Annual Master Showman Contest, which was held on Friday, August 7th, was another success event this year! The Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council planned and organized the event that welcomed 17 participants in 3 separate divisions. All three division winners won a belt buckle and all participants received a complimentary t-shirt. This year’s winners were Dani Maines (pictured above right) of the Clearfield FFA Chapter – Last Call Division Winner, Katie McAndrew (pictured above left) of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club - Senior Division Winner, and Katelyn Matthews (pictured above center) of the Rocky Ridge 4-H Club - Junior Division Winner. Camps & Competitions Kept 4-H'ers Busy All Summer Long

From May through July, 4-H members from across the county really kept themselves busy!

Nick Kovalick of the Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club traveled to Happy Valley for the 2009 4-H Dairy Days Cow Camp. This educational program was an opportunity for youth between the ages of 8-18 years of age experience modern dairy production practices. This year's camp took place on Friday, May 29th through Sunday, May 31st, 2009 at Penn State University. Saturday’s hands-on workshops for the senior participants involved hoof care, genomic evaluations, and forage quality/rumen health, while junior workshops focused on biotechnology, calf health, and dairy products. Social events included a picnic, fun night with go-carts and par-3 golf at Tussey Mountain Fun Center, and an ice cream social.

On June 21st through 25th, Clearfield County sent 21 4-H campers to the 2009 Regional 4-H Camp held at Camp Kanesatake in Spruce Creek. Overnight Campers included: Mary-Beth Maguire, Adeline McCafferty, Morgan Reardon, & Violet Sleigh. Full Week/Traditional Campers included: Brooke Ell, Dustin Fisch, Gust Fisch, Cassandra Folmar, Chelsea Folmar, Abby Junod, Ben Junod, Nick Kovalick, Fran McAninch, Olivia McCafferty, Jaret McCracken, Kestrel Merritt, Michael Minicucci, Amanda Pennington, Brogan Peters, Heather Shimmel, & Sydney Turner. The campers took part in numerous fun-filled, adventurous activities, as well as educational workshops based on the camp theme “Keeping it Green.” We had 10 terrific camp counselors and volunteered and dedicated a great deal of their time into making sure each and every 4-H camper had an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. 2009 Clearfield County Camp Counselors included: Courtney Bakaysa, Yvonne Bush, Emily Johnson, Liz McAndrew, Katie McAndrew, Don Smeal, Devon Turner, Morgan Turner, Megan Williams, and Ariana Yaple.

July 28th through July 30th, we had 10 Clearfield County 4-H members travel to Penn State University to take part in the 2009 Pennsylvania State 4-H Achievement Days, where youth have the opportunity to take part in one of many competitive and non-competitive events. Our Horse Bowl team, with members Marissa Douthit, Chelsea Folmar, Liz McAndrew, and Katie McAndrew, took 3rd place. All 4 team members are from the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Our Shotgun Junior Division Team, with members JR McMahon, Tyler Passmore, and David Kephart finished in 2nd place. JR also received 1st place as an individual. All 3 team members are from the Clearfield County 4-H Top Guns. Abby Lee and Arah Shaffer, both of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club, participated in State Chorus. Devon Turner of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club place 14th as an individual in the Rabbit & Cavy Contest. Finally, Fran McAninch of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club placed 15th as an individual in the Horse Judging Junior Division Contest. During the closing ceremony and awards presentation on Thursday, July 30th, our very own Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council was recognized for being an Outstanding County Council. We received 3rd place in a statewide contest and the council was given a $200.00 monetary gift, which helped pay for activities and events the council sponsored at the 2009 Clearfield County Fair.

Katie McAndrew named 2009 PA Outstanding 4-H Horse Member

Katie L. McAndrew, daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway, was recently named the Pennsylvania Outstanding 4-H Horse Member for 2009. Katie will be recognized for her achievement on Saturday, October 24th at the 50th Annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show held at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Katie is the first winner from Clearfield County since Janee Carr of Clearfield in 1995.

Katie, who currently serves as president of both the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club and the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council, has been involved in the 4-H program for 11 years. Katie has been extremely active participating in both horse and leadership project areas. Katie has been recognized for her accomplishments at county, district, regional, and state level. In addition to qualifying and participating in the Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show annually with both performance and production projects, Katie has been recognized for her outstanding showmanship skills and has been rewarded with a Master Showman Ribbon at both the regional and state level.

Outside of the show ring, Katie has participated in the PA State 4-H Leadership Conference, Penn State 4-H Achievement Days, where she participated in both the Horse Judging and Horse Bowl contests, PA 4-H Capital Days, Regional 4-H Camp at Camp Kanesatake, where she has served as a camp counselor since 2007, 4-H Day at Kennywood, and numerous Regional 4-H Teen Retreats. Katie was recognized as one of Clearfield County’s Outstanding 4-H Teen Leaders for 2008. Recently, Katie was recognized as the Senior Division Master Showman during a contest held at the 2009 Clearfield County Fair. During this contest, Katie mastered the showmanship of a dairy cow, horse, lamb, and pig. Over her 11 year 4-H career, Katie has displayed terrific citizenship skills through her community service efforts. Through her 4-H club’s Adopt-a-Highway litter clean-up projects, sending care packages to troops serving in the military or children in need, and collecting items for our local food pantries, animal shelters, and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Katie has really made a difference in the lives of others within her community and truly lives by the 4-H Motto, “To Make the Best Better.”

Katie is a 2009 graduate of Brockway Area High School and is currently a freshman at California University of Pennsylvania.

At the end of October, Katie will be traveling to the 2009 Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show with three horse projects in a total of five classes. She will be showing two production horses, Docs Keystone Kid in the Palomino Three Year Old Gelding Class, as well as the Three Year Old Western Pleasure Futurity class and Col Bobs Skipa Peanut in the Palomino Yearling Fillies class. Clearfield County has been very competitive in the 4-H horse program and has had several finalists for this award of the years. Finalists include Janee Carr (1995 winner), Rebecca Moorhouse (1998), Jana Duttry (1999), Morgan Bacher (2003), Heather Mabie (2005), Joelle Palumbo (2006), Jenifer McAndrew (2007), and Katie McAndrew (2008 finalist & 2009 winner).

Morgan B. Turner is selected as the 2009 Lewie Greene 4-H Memorial Scholarship Winner

The Clearfield County 4-H Program is proud to announce that Morgan B. Turner is the 2009 recipient of the Lewie Greene 4-H Memorial Scholarship.

Morgan is the 18 year old daughter of Mark & Sally Turner of Philipsburg. Morgan is a member of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club, as well as the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council.

Morgan has belonged to the Clearfield County 4-H Program for 9 years and over the course of her involvement has completed numerous 4-H projects including horse, rabbit, embryology, poultry, sheep, wildlife, sewing, archery, bicycling, public speaking, and teen leadership. Morgan said all of these projects taught her something new and she had a wonderful, educational experience completing each one. Morgan’s tremendous animal skills and knowledge helped her to have several reserve and grand champion rabbits in the Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Junior Livestock & Poultry Sale held each year during the Clearfield County Fair. In 2007, Morgan also raised the Grand Champion 4-H Market Lamb.

In her 4-H club, Morgan has served in many leadership positions including president, vice-president, treasurer, news reporter, and teen leader. Morgan has also served as a 4-H camp counselor for the past three years. Her outstanding leadership abilities helped Morgan to receive the honor of being named Outstanding Clearfield County 4-H Teen Leader in 2008, as well as being named a runner-up in 2007, and a Clearfield County Outstanding 4-H Junior Teen Leader in 2005 and 2006.

According to Morgan, 4-H has been a major influence on her life by teaching and enhancing her skills in public speaking, discipline, decision making, and hands-on learning all while having a good time and meeting new friends. Morgan also credits 4-H for helping expand her love of animals by giving her the opportunity to gain knowledge through showing and caring for them. “Morgan has been an outstanding role model and mentor to all youth involved in the Clearfield County 4-H Program. She has participated in numerous programs throughout the county region, and state including PA State 4-H Achievement Days, Regional 4-H Camp, Regional 4-H Teen Retreats, Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contests, numerous horse and rabbit shows, and both club and county community service projects.” Jana Davidson, Children & Youth Development Educator.

In addition to 4-H, Morgan is a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA), Pennsylvania State Rabbit Breeders Association (PaSRBA), American Dwarf Hotot Rabbit Club (ADHRC), Mid-Atlantic Dwarf Hotot Specialty Club (MADHC), and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).

Morgan is a 2009 graduate of Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School and is currently a freshman at the Pennsylvania State University majoring in Biological Engineering. She plans to apply the engineering principles she gains with her future degree to conduct research in various aspects of agriculture.

The Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Committee is very pleased to announce the ten recipients of this year’s 4-H & FFA Livestock Sale Scholarship. Each recipient met all of the eligibility requirements, which included being enrolled in some form of post-secondary education and being an active Livestock Sale Participant within 4 years of applying. 4-H and FFA members are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of four years as long as they continue to meet the scholarship requirements. Former 4-H and FFA members are also eligible up to their fourth year after graduation. All scholarship applications were due to the Livestock Sale Committee on September 15th.

Josiah Delwyn Fry was also named a recipient this year. J. Delwyn is a former member of the Harmony 4-H Club and is a junior at Penn State University - University Park Campus majoring in Aerospace Engineering. J. Delwyn is the son of Barry and Regina Fry of Westover.

Another scholarship recipient is Tyler Johns. Tyler is a member of the Clearfield County 4-H Livestock Club. Tyler is a freshman at Penn State University - DuBois Campus majoring in Agribusiness Management. Tyler is the son of Denny and Pam Johns of Curwensville.

New Clearfield County 4-H Plat Books Have Arrived!!!!

The latest edition of the Clearfield County Plat Book is now available at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office, located on the second floor of the Multi-Service Center in Clearfield. The Clearfield County Plat Book is not only a great source of historical land information, but it contains specific information to all land located in each Township of Clearfield County including landowners, streets, roads, streams, lakes, and boundary lines. With its vast amount of county land information, the plat book makes for an excellent gift. The cost of each plat book is $40.00. Plat books can also be purchased at Bob’s Army Navy Store, Clearfield Agway, the Clearfield County Assessment & Tax Claims Office, and Wayland Farm Supply/Agway of DuBois.

The Clearfield County 4-H Program adopted the Clearfield County Plat Book a several years ago as the 4-H Program’s main fundraiser. All the money collected from the sale of these books goes towards funding programs offered through the Clearfield County 4-H Program, as well as building the Clearfield County 4-H Endowment Fund, which will ensure the 4-H program is continues to grow well into the future. Over 200 youth belong to one of the seventeen 4-H clubs located throughout the Clearfield County. With the help of this fundraiser, 4-H members are given the opportunity to participate in many county, regional, and state programs, as well as numerous trainings offered throughout the year for both 4-H members and volunteer leaders. The plat book fundraiser covers many of the costs associated with these events.

For those of you that attended the 2009 4-H Club Officer & Volunteer Leader Training this past February at the Tri-County Church of God in DuBois, you heard about the new E-Data on-line registration system from the Central Region's Volunteer Development Educator, Deb Burrows of Clinton County.

Beginning October 1, 2009, the E-Data System will be the ONLY way to enroll as a 4-H member of 4-H volunteer leader. This will also be the primary way to register for programs and events offered throughout the county, region, and state. Therefore, paper copies of enrollment forms will become a thing of the past, so please hold off on sending paper forms to our office for 2010. All 4-H members and leaders will be required to enroll on-line through this system. Both myself and my office staff will NOT be able to register for you! This system should make enrollment in the future a lot easier, as your information will be saved in this database and you will only need to make a few updates each year.

Greetings,

My apologies to all of my faithful blog readers for not posting in quite awhile, but there have been so many 4-H summer activites that have kept me busy starting with 4-H Camp in June and ending with the Clearfield County Fair in August!

On August 12, I welcomed my second daughter, Lily Grace. Lily was born at 11:57 a.m. weighing 7 pounds/4 ounces and being 17.5 inches long. Lily joins big sister, Lauren, who is 3 years old.

I am currently on maternity leave until October, so please stay tuned for new blog posts after I am back to work! In closing, please find a photo of the new addition with her proud big sister!!!!!

Regional 4-H Horse Driving Clinic Scheduled for June

Regional 4-H Driving Clinics will be held in three different locations across the state in June. We thank Mr. Lorin Nauman and Ms. Samea Baker, for taking time from their busy schedules to conduct the clinics.

Ms. Baker is an American Driving Society Judge and Technical Delegate in both Pleasure Driving and Combined Driving. She has judged many horse shows for all disciplines of driving and currently holds a USEF “r” card. She has also shown many champions at carriage shows, including Devon and has been long listed for 2003 and 2005 US World Pony teams. Mr. Nauman started by driving draft teams in Wyoming as a means of accomplishing winter chores. In 1998 he moved to Pennsylvania, and later apprenticed with driving instructor, Olaf Nyby of Norway. In 2004 he went to Wales, UK, where he trained, and tested through the British Driving Societies Driving Proficiency Program, obtaining his light harness horse instructors certification. Since then he has operated his boarding and training center in Centre County, PA. He has been very supportive of the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse program by offering his services as a driving clinician in various locations across the state.

The clinics will begin at 5:00 p.m. and conclude at dark. Enrollment is limited to 15 equine/cart combinations for Erie County; all other clinics will be limited to 20 equine and carts. Verification of a current rabies vaccination and current negative EIA/Coggins is required for all animals. Adults and non 4-H members are welcome, as space permits. Clinic fees are: $10.00 4-H members (with equines/carts); $15.00 for general public (with equines/carts) and $5.00 for spectators. Clinic participants will learn how to prepare, harness and drive draft horses, pleasure horses and ponies, or minis, with emphasis on proper turnout and safety techniques for handling and driving. Current 4-H driving rules and procedures also will be included as well as industry standards.

2009 PA Outstanding Horse Member Award Applications Available

All 4-H horse members between the ages of 15 and 18, as of January 1st, are eligible to compete for the 2009 PA 4-H Horse Program Outstanding Member Award. Applications are available in the Extension Office and are due back by Friday, July 31, 2009 to be considered. A winner and four to five finalists from across the commonwealth will be recognized at the 2009 PA State 4-H Horse Show in October and win terrific prizes which may include a tack trunk or leather horse halter and lead rope. This is a great opportunity for all 4-H horse members.

Clearfield County has had several 4-H members receive recognition over the past few years.

2009 Clearfield County Fair Premium Books Are Ready

The 2009 Clearfield County Fair Premium Books are now available! If you haven't received one in the mail, feel free to pick one up at either the Clearfield County Fair Office or the Extension Office. This year's Clearfield County Fair will tak place Sunday, August 2 - Saturday, August 8, 2009!

All 4-H/Department 10 Entries should be completed on a 4-part form, which are available at the Extension Office. To make it easier on those doing filing entries for the Fair, please use a separate 4-part form for each different category such as swine, goats, sheep, horses, dairy, vegetables, etc.... You may have been told differently in the past, but please try to process the forms this way! All Clearfield County Fair entries must be received by the Clearfield County Fair Office by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009! No late entries will be accepted! Please submit the canary yellow copy to the Extension Office.

For open show entries or any entries outside of 4-H/Department 10 - please use the entry forms available in the back on the premium book.

2009 4-H Day with the State College Spikes

Just a reminder ----- ticket orders are still being accepted for the 2009 PA 4-H Youth Achievement Night at the Ballpark with the State Colleg Spikes, as they take on the Jamestown Jammers. The game will take place on Friday, July 10, 2009.

The Spikes are a short-season class-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. They share Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with the Penn State baseball team located on the Penn State University Campus. Fireworks will follow the game and there will be an ooportunity for a lucky 4-H member to throw out the Cermonial First Pitch!!!!

Tickets are only $4.00 each, but must be ordered by Friday, May 22nd through the Extension Office. More information and a registration brochure was included in the Spring 2009 4-H Newsletter; however, additional registration flyers are available through the Extension Office.

2009 Pennsylvania 4-H Capital Days

4-H’ers from across Pennsylvania met in Harrisburg for the 45th Annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Capital Days, an annual citizenship awareness event that was held April 19-21 at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers. Two 4-H members from Clearfield County were in attendance at this event. Katie McAndrew and Elizabeth McAndrew, both the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club represented Clearfield County this year. Katie & Elizabeth are the daughters of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway.

The goal of the two-day program is to introduce 4-H’ers to Pennsylvania government through a series of hands-on, interactive experiences, says Phil Hoy, youth program management coordinator in Penn State's department of agricultural and extension education. “Participants will learn how laws are passed by participating in a mock legislative session. They are grouped into the majority and minority parties to discuss their party’s stand on the issues, and then come together as full house and vote on three bills that include issues such as internet laws, school calendar year, and tobacco possession for minors.”

Other activities included being welcomed by Representative Scott Conklin, as well as several workshops on Pennsylvania’s legislative process, diversity issues, personalities, and interview skills.

“This event introduces youth to an experience that they typically would not be exposed to in a traditional classroom setting. The Pennsylvania 4-H State Council served as master of ceremonies as well as conducting the mock legislative sessions. This helps us to illustrate the importance of the 4-H experience in leadership and citizen development,” says Hoy.

“4-H Capital Days is one of several opportunities for Pennsylvania’s youth to learn to be engaged with their communities,” states Christy Bartley, state 4-H program leader. “4-H members learn about local, state, and national governments through several opportunities during the program year.” 4-H partnered with Representative Scott Conklin to plan and implement this year’s event.

2009 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest Results

On Tuesday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m., Clearfield County hosted the 18th Annual Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest in the Hiller Auditorium of Penn State University – DuBois Campus. The event was open to all Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson County 4-H members, ages 8 through 18, as of January 1st. 7 4-H members from Clearfield & Jefferson Counties participated in one of four categories, including Senior Division Public Speaking, Junior Division Public Speaking, Senior Division Presentations, & Junior Division Presentations.

This year, topics included baking with yeast, being prepared, piano music, herpetology, the layers of mud, kittens, and rabbits. Individuals entering into the Public Speaking contest where asked to give a 4 to 7 minute original talk on any topic. Participants in this category were only allowed to use note cards; no other illustrative material was allowed to be used. Individuals entering into the Presentation contest where asked to conduct a presentation about a 4-H project, hobby, or activity they have been involved with. Junior Division participants were given up to 8 minutes for their presentation and Senior Division participants were given between 10 and 12 minutes for their presentation.

In the Public Speaking Senior Division competition, Chelsea Folmar, a member of both the Clearfield County 4-H Riflery Club and Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club, received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Chelsea is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg.

In the Senior Division Presentation competition, Kathleen Thomas of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Kathleen is the daughter of Pamela Thomas of Morrisdale.

In the Junior Division Presentation Contest, Amberley Spicher of the Gateway 4-H Club received first place honors. Amberley is the daughter of Marty & Sherri Spicher of Punxsutawney. Second place honors went to Sydney Turner of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club. Sydney is the daughter of Mark & Sally Turner of Philipsburg. May Betts, a member of the Free Spirit 4-H Club was recognized for thirst place. Mary is the daughter of Dan & Sue Betts of Hawk Run. Cassandra Folmar, dual member of both the Clearfield County 4-H Riflery Club and Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club, received fourth place. Cassandra is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg. Fifth place went to Kimberly Ward of the Free Spirit 4-H Club. Kimberly is the daughter of Shawn & Laurie Ward of Morrisdale. Each junior division participant received a 4-H bag filled with 4-H items.

All participants received a certificate of achievement and a ribbon.

Two local individuals served as judges for this year’s contest. Judges for event included Joan Robinson-McMillen. Ms. McMillen currently serves as a Clearfield County Commissioner, where she is the second woman to serve as a commissioner for the county and is the first woman to serve in the role as chairperson. Ms. McMillen resides in Clearfield with her husband Kevin and son Harrison. Also serving as a judge was Rachel Carr-Davidson. Rachel was an 11 year member of the Graham Township 4-H Club of Morrisdale. In 2004, Rachel was crowned as the Clearfield County Fair Queen and a few months later was recognized as a Top 5 Finalist for Pennsylvania State Fair Queen. Ms. Davidson is still very involved with the Clearfield County Fair Queen Program and the “Queens for Kids” charity. Ms. Davidson is currently employed through Magna Card in DuBois and she resides in DuBois with her husband Michael.

The competition was followed by refreshments and an awards ceremony. “A very special thank you goes out to all of the 4-H leaders, parents, and guests that helped support the youth, as well as Penn State – DuBois Campus for allowing us the use of both the Hiller Auditorium and Quiet Lounge.” Jana Lynne Davidson, Children & Youth Development Educator.

Welcome Leah Carr - 2009 4-H Summer Program Assistant

As many of you already know, I will be expecting my second child this summer! My due date is August 19, so I plan to be around most of the summer including the 2009 Clearfield County Fair. Since the summer is such a busy time, I was lucky enough to obtain help from a past 4-H member. Therefore, I would like to welcome Leah Carr as the 2009 Clearfield County 4-H Summer Assistant.

Leah was a member of the Graham Township 4-H Club for 11 years. Last year, she ended her 4-H career serving in the role of president of her 4-H club, as well as being named the recipient of the 2008 Lewie Greene 4-H Memorial Scholarship. Last summer, Leah was crowned the 2008 Clearfield County Fair Queen and this past January was named First Alternate in the 2009 Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Contest held in Hershey, PA. As a Fair Queen, Leah has dedicated a lot of her time to helping with the Queens for Kids charities including pancake breakfasts and the Annual Music Fund Fest to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. Leah has also had numerous speaking engagements throughout the county over the past year.

Leah was a 2008 high honors graduate of West Branch Area High School, were she finished second in her class! She is currently finishing up her freshman year at Penn State University - DuBois Campus majoring in Business with a minor in Agricultural Business. Throughout her first year of college, despite her busy schedule with classes and fair queen duties, Leah has been recognized for her hard work by receiving many awards and scholarships. Leah plans to attend Penn State University Main Campus in the spring of 2010. She is looking forward to working with our office this summer and anxious to meet many of you! Leah will be starting at her position with our office mid-May and working into October when I return from maternity leave. Please help me welcome Leah! I know she will do an excellent job this summer!

Clearfield County Fair Queen Applications Now Available

If you are interested in competing for the title of 2009 Clearfield County Fair Queen, entry forms are now available at the Extension Office.

EACH CONTESTANT MUST BE:

Be a resident of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.

Be sixteen years of age and not over twenty years old by June 1.

Have her parents or guardians consent if under 18 years of age..

All contestants must be of the female gender.

Be single, never married, have had no children and must not marry, nor become pregnant during her reign.

Not be a former Clearfield County Fair Queen or a State Association Queen winner.

Be willing to promote the Clearfield County Fair by speaking at dinner meetings, club dinners, public affairs, etc.

Be available to reign for a period of one year.

Be willing to work around livestock, such as cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and poultry.

Be willing to write a 300 word or less essay on what the Clearfield County Fair means to me.

Be willing to attend the Clearfield County Fair every day.
Be available to attend the Pennsylvania State Fair Association's Queen Contest in January for four days. (All expenses will be paid by the Clearfield County Fair and Park Board for the Queen and one parent/guardian only)

Proof of graduation must be presented if already out of high school.

Each year, Clearfield County 4-H members always do extremely well in this competition! This is a great opportunity to develop skills in public speaking and meet interesting people from across the county. Entry forms are available at the Extension Office, as well as the Clearfield County Fair & Park Office. Entry forms are due to the Clearfield County Fair & Park Board Office by June 1, 2009.

Interested in learning about dairy cattle??? The Penn State Youth Dairy Cow Camp is an exciting opportunity for youth 8-18 years old to experience modern dairy production practices. This year's camp will take place Friday, May 29 – Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Penn State University. Saturday’s hands-on workshops for the senior participants will involve hoof care, genomic evaluations, and forage quality/rumen health. Junior workshops will focus on biotechnology, calf health, and dairy products. Social events will include a picnic, fun night with go-carts and par-3 golf at Tussey Mountain Fun Center, and an ice cream social.

Instruction at the Camp is provided by faculty and staff of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science at Penn State University. The cost to attend this event is $50.00. Each youth camper's fees cover meals, chaperoned lodging in university residence halls, and all program materials. In addition, you may bring spending money for souvenirs and other items.

Pa 4-H Awareness Week Recap

WOW! During this year's Pennsylvania 4-H Awareness Week, I noticed many 4-H clubs took advantage of the window dispay contest and brightened up the windows of many local businesses throughout Clearfield County. Don't forget to get recognition for all your hard work by submitting photos, as well as brief write-up detailing where your display was located and your display's theme. Photos and write-ups are due to the Extension Office by April 30!

This year's kick-off roller skating party on Tuesday, March 17 was a blast and had over 100 people in attendance. We also took part in community service efforts and collected three large boxes of non-perishable food items, which were donated to our local food bank.

The week came to a close with the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast at the Dutch Pantry Restaurant of DuBois on Saturday, March 21. The council made close to $350 in tips and orders. A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone that supported this breakfast, as well as all the teens that donated their time as servers! Regional 4-H Camp - Keeping it Green!

Planning is well underway for this year’s Regional 4-H Camp! The 2009 4-H Camp theme is “Keeping it Green.” We have decided to offer two separate camps again this year! 4-H Camp will be a week later than usually this year to account for school schedules!

We will be offering a Mini 4-H Camp for all 8 year olds, as well as interested 9 & 10 year olds, from Sunday, June 21 to Monday, June 22, 2009 at Camp Kanesatake located in Spruce Creek in Huntingdon, PA. The cost is $55.00, but Clearfield will pay $20.00, leaving your cost $35.00!

Traditional 4-H Camp will take place from Monday, June 22 through Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Camp Kanesatake near Spruce Creek in Huntingdon, PA. 4-H members between the ages of 9 to 14 years of age as of January 1st, 2009 are welcome to attend. The cost is $140.00, but Clearfield will pay $20.00, leaving your cost $120.00! Please note this year – all Traditional 4-H Campers are asked to choose their morning theme & afternoon recreational workshop choices on the registration form!

A registration brochure was included in the recent 4-H newsletter with additional details! All payments should be submitted withapplications – checks can be made payable to “PSCE Clearfield County Program Funds”

Hurry – the registration deadline is Friday, May 8! All 4-H members that submit registrations after this date will be put on a waiting list!!

Ten 4-H members of the Clearfield County 4-H Riflery Club recently took part in the Clearfield County 4th Annual 4-H Air Rifle Shoot held at the DuBois Rifle & Pistol Club in DuBois on Sunday, March 1. Katie McAndrew (left) of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club recently attended the 2009 Pennsylvania State 4-H Leadership Conference, “Dive into Leadership” on January 30th – February 1st at the Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center. Katie was accompanied by Jana Davidson (right), Children & Youth Development Educator for Clearfield County. This was Katie’s second year attending the event and attended numerous workshops to help her in her role as president of her 4-H club and a teen leader for the county. Katie is the daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway. This was Jana’s fifth time attending the conference as a chaperone and presenter. Jana held two different workshops for the 4-H teens on the topics of group dynamics, as well as the PA 4-H Ambassador Training.

Animal Ethics & Quality Assurance Trainings

Tuesday, May 12, Tuesday, May 19, & Thursday May 21 are the three dates that Animal Ethics & Quality Assurance Trainings will be taking place for Clearfield County. Sessions will take place at the Multi-Service Center in Clearfield unless noted otherwise!

Prior to May 1st all 4-H members in need of this training will be notified, as well as all 4-H Organizational Leaders. All 4-H members planning to show dairy cattle, goats, horses, sheep, swine, & steer at the 2009 Clearfield County Fair or other 4-H sponsored animal shows MUST be up-to-date with their training. Currently, the minimum county requirement is for youth to receive the training twice in their 4-H career, first as an 8 year old or new member and again at age 14.

23rd Annual Winning Ways Clinic with Lori Gordon - March 14

The 23rd Annual Winning Ways Horse Clinic will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Penn State University’s Snider Agricultural Arena. Lori Gordon will serve as the clinician. No matter if you show Western or Hunt Seat, or are a novice or experienced rider, this clinic is for you, as it will have a strong focus on the fundamentals of good horsemanship. There will also be a used tack and clothing sale both days of the event.

The cost to attend after March 7th is $30.00. Registration can be made in advanced or on the morning of the clinic.

PA 4-H Forestry Fild Day - What's in Your Woods! - May 9

Pennsylvania’s 4-H Forestry Field Day is slated for May 9, 2009, from 9:45 AM - 3 PM at Laurel Haven Conservation Education Center, Julian, PA (near Penn State). This event is open to all 4-Hers who have taken, or are planning to undertake any 4-H forestry project. The event has two options. There is an "Exploratory Tract" for younger 4-Hers (ages 8-11) and a "Competitive Tract" for older youth (ages 12-18). All adults and 4-H volunteers are welcome to attend.

Participants signing up for the Exploratory Tract will learn tree identification, compass use, and tree measurement, which are all components of the Trees + Me = Forestry 4-H project. This is non-competitive, educational, and fun. No advance study is required for the Exploratory Tract. 4-Hers in the Competitive Tract will participate in both a forestry knowledge and judging contest. A project book with everything one needs to know for this tract is available as a download at the web site listed below or by contacting your County Cooperative Extension Office. The top four teens (ages 14 years and up) will go on to participate in the 2009 National 4-H Forestry Invitational in West Virginia.

There is no fee for this event, but all youth and adults planning to attend should sign up through the County Cooperative Extension Office. Participants must bring their own sack lunch and drink, and everyone is encouraged to dress for field conditions. PA 4-H Wildlife Field Day - Have a Wild Time! - April 18

A wildlife "field day" for fun and learning is scheduled on Saturday, April 18, 2009, (9:30 AM - 3:00 PM) at Rock Springs (Ag Progress Days Site) near Penn State. This state event is wide open to all 4-H'ers (ages 8 -18) interested in or currently taking wildlife projects. 4-H adult volunteers and parents are also encouraged to attend. There will be two program options offered concurrently at the event.

The first option is the "Exploratory Tract," designed for youth ages 8-11. It will include hands-on wildlife educational activities and guest speakers. This year's theme for the Exploratory Tract is "Pennsylvania's Birds of Prey.? These magnificent birds are at the top of the food chain, and they have many unique adaptations and abilities! Come explore these birds through fun outdoor activities!

The second is the "Competitive Tract." It will offer youth, ages 12-18, a chance to participate in a wildlife habitat evaluation contest. This is an educational competitive event that provides a great opportunity for youth to apply their knowledge about wildlife to real life situations. The Competitive Tract will also include a habitat tour. There is a project book that 4-H'ers should study before coming to this event. It is available on request through the County Cooperative Extension Office, or it can be downloaded from the web site listed below. Four 4-H members, between the ages of 14 and 18 years old, will be selected to attend the 2009 National Wildlife Evaluation Event.

Volunteer Leaders, Agents, and parents are welcome to attend the field day to observe either option. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the field, and bring along their own bag lunches and and water bottles. Lunch will NOT be provide this year, sorry. There is no fee for the event, but all youth and adults planning to attend should sign up through the County Cooperative Extension Office. Let us know which option your youth wish to undertake. Registration will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the contest will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. All 4-H members from Clearfield, Jefferson, Elk, and Cameron Counties are invited and encouraged to attend. Special awards will be given to the first, second, and third place Senior Division Contest participants and certificates and special prizes will be given to all Junior Division Contest participants. The Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council will be hosting an ALL YOU CAN EAT PANCAKE BREAKFAST on Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Dutch Pantry Restaurant of DuBois (conveniently located of Interstate 80 – Exit 97). The cost is only $5.00 per person!

This program will recognize the 2008 achievements of our 4-H members in completing quality project books, participation in county, regional, and state 4-H events, excellence in their roles as club officers, and outstanding teen leadership. 4-H Leaders will also be recognized for their years of service, as well as individual clubs for their community service efforts, participation in activities throughout the 2008 4-H year, and dedication to live by the 4-H motto and “Make the Best Better.”

All families planning to attend this year’s banquet are asked to bring a covered dish to share, as well as a $1.00 donation to help with the cost of table settings, etc…. The 49th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show was held October 24, 25 and 26 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Youth from over 60 counties participated in this year's show. Approximately 880 youth and 1000 horses competed in 49 performance and 91 production classes. In addition to the class placings, three local youth were recognized for additional horse accomplishments:

Chelsea Folmar of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club was recognized as a Master Showman Recipient. This is a special ward given to horse handler with production projects that demonstrate exemplary horsemanship handling skills. Chelsea is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg.
Shalise Gallaher of the Cowboy Up 4-H Club was recognized with three other 4-H members from across the state for completing Level 3 of the Pennsylvania 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program. Shalise is the daughter of Dave & Rhonda Gallaher of Grampian.
Katie McAndrew of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club was recognized along with 4 other 4-H members from across the state for being named as a finalist for the Pennsylvania Outstanding 4-H Horse Member Award. Katie is the daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway.

The Clearfield County Conservation District, Clearfield FFA Chapter, & Penn State Cooperative Extension of Clearfield County are hosting an EQUINE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Agriculture Building of the Clearfield County Fairgrounds - Clearfield, PA

This FREE educational program is open to all interested horse owners and horse enthusiasts! Topics will include the economics of feeding horses, creating a feed program, horse hoof care, equine health issues, and laws and regulations that affect horse operations. We will meet in the front parking lot of the Multi-Service Center on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and carpool to a Corn Maze at the Krevel Farm in Cherry Tree. Around 6:00 p.m. we will begin our Halloween party in Auditorium of the Multi-Service Center.

Registration is now open for the 2009 Team America Rocketry Challenge, the world's largest rocket contest challenging participants to compete for $60,000 in prizes and scholarships and a trip to next year's international air show in Paris.

Contest rules and registration are at http://www.rocketcontest.org/. Participation is limited to the first 750 teams who register by Monday, December 1.

The Challenge: Teams must design and build a rocket containing a raw egg that will climb to 750 feet and stay aloft for 45 seconds. This year's new task is transporting the one-egg payload lying on its side rather than positioned vertically, mimicking the position of an astronaut. Students in grades 7-12 in any U.S. school or non-profit youth organization are eligible to compete. About 7,000 students from across the country took part in the contest in 2008, and since TARC's first contest in 2003, almost 50,000 students have taken the challenge. A 4-H team from Washington County, WI http://www.4hrocketry.org/ placed 15th in TARC nationally in 2007.

Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) sponsors the contest with the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), NASA, the Defense Department, and AIA member companies. NAR http://www.nar.org/ is a partner with 4-H and specifically invites 4-H groups to try TARC.
The rocket contest gives future engineers the opportunity to demonstrate their math and physics skills. Working together in a team environment, they will design a real aerospace product, which will be put through the rigors of testing and evaluation. For more details download

2009 4-H Day with the Penn State Lady Lions

The 2009 4-H Day with the Penn State Lady Lions Basketball Game is scheduled for Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. This game will be against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Tickets are $1.00 per person and must be ordered through the Clearfeidl County Extension Office by December 12, 2008. Checks can e made payable to "PSCE Clearfield County Program Funds" More details will be in the Winter 4-H Newsletter.

The Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council, as part of their community service efforts, will be having a "Celebrity Wait Staff Nite" on Wednesday, November 5th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Dutch Pantry of DuBois (Interstate 80 - DuBois Exit 97).

All tips, plus 10% of the dining room sales, will be donated to helping local 4-H families in need! We recently had 2 4-H families experience unfortunate tragedies in the past month. One 4-H member was in a serious car accident and has no health insurance and another family lost their home in a fire.

Please come out for a great meal and to help support this special cause!

2009 National 4-H Conference

The 2009 National 4-H Conference will take place March 28 - April 2 at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Nomination packets (including a narrative/letter on why you would like to attend the conference) are due by November 1, 2008 to the state, so if you are interested, please contact Jana ASAP for additional details.

4-H member must be at least 15 years of age by January 1, 2009 to be eligible.

Although costs to attend this national event can run close to $1,000 - scholarships are available to youth interested in attending.

Just a friendly reminder that all project books, as well a outstanding 4-H club officer & teen leader applications are due to the Extension Office by November 15!

Please be aware that your 4-H leaders may have an earlier deadline to collect books and judge them at club level before sending on the top books for county-wide judging.

While completeing your project books and other applications, please remember to try and keep them neat and legible. For acivity books, make sure you have the minimim number of activities complete, which is a minimum of seven (7) per year. Also, a record book should accompany all animal project books.

ATTENTION 4-H CLUB TREASURERS - Even if you do not apply for a club officer award, you still must submit you book to Jana for an end of the year audit and other tax-related purposes!!!!!

Krevel Farms Annual Corn Maze

Looking for a fun fall activity for your 4-H club?

Take a trip to Krevel Farms for their annual corn maze. The Corn Maze opens on October 3 and ends on November 2.

Krevel Farms is located 2750 Sylvis Road in Cherry Tree, PA. The Corn Maze is open Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., & Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is $4.00 per person (children under 3 years of age are free and children under 12 years of age should be accompanied by an adult).

2008 PA 4-H Leadership Conference - "Dive into Leadership"

This year’s State 4-H Leadership Conference will take place on Friday, January 30 through Sunday, February 1, 2009 at the Penn State Hotel & Conference Center in State College.

This year’s event offers numerous leadership opportunities for 4-H teen, at least 13 years of age as of January 1st.

As you will notice on the registration flyer attached, there are once again two (2) tracks
· County 4-H Ambassador Track (for those wanting to enhance their leadership at county-level and serve as a county 4-H spokesperson). You will note specific require sessions marked with an (A) that you must take on this track.
· Leadership Track – this is a general for all youth willing to develop leadership skills to use at county-level and beyond.

Registration is as follows:
· Early Bird – Prior to November 1 at $210.00 per person
· Regular – November 2 to December 1 at $220.00 per person
· Late – December 2 to December 10 at $230.00 per person

The cost includes two nights lodging, meals, workshop costs, nationally known speakers and presenters, conference materials, the service learning event, and other program costs.

The Clearfield County 4-H Development Fund will give a $50.00 scholarship towards all participants (please deduct from payment at time of registration). Please also note, that the State 4-H Council has decided to offer an incentive discount ($20.00) for every member who attended the conference last year and 1) will attend again this year AND 2) RECRUITS A FRIEND WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE CONFERENCE to come along with them!

Just a quick reminder that we have a great resource right here in Clearfield County! Abby Dressler is finishing her final months on the 2008 PA State 4-H Council. On February 1, 2009, we will induct a new council during the PA 4-H Leadership Conference and Abby’s career as an official 4-H member will sadly come to an end.

Abby currently serves as President of both the Open Range 4-H Club & Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council, as well as News Reporter for the PA State 4-H Council.

Although Abby is busy with her state duties, as well as her college duties as a freshman at Lock Haven University – Clearfield Campus and her employment with Tractor Supply, she would be glad to try and fit you in her schedule and help you energize your 4-H club as you re-organize this fall.

Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council Halloween Party & Lock-in

The 2008 Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council will be holding a Halloween Party & Lock-in for all current members of the teen council, as well as anyone interested in joining the council for 2009. The event will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2008

The festivities will begin at 2:00 p.m. with some team building activities at Krevel Farms Corn Maze in Cherry Tree. Then we will move onto our business meeting and dinner, followed by a Halloween Costume Party, Halloween Games, and fun Halloween snacks at a location To Be Announced. Youth will have the option to stay overnight if they choose. The event will be chaperoned by Teen Council Advisor Jana Davidson.

All guests are encouraged to bring snacks or a special Halloween treat.

KATIE MCANDREW - 2008 PA Outstanding 4-H Horse Member Award Finalist

Congratulations goes out to Town & Country 4-H Horse & Pony Club member, Katie McAndrew, for being named a finalist for the 2008 Pennsylvania Outstanding 4-H Horse Member Award. Katie, along with four other individuals, was selected from applications from 4-H horse members across the commonwealth.

This year's award will be given out during the 2008 PA State 4-H Horse Show on Saturday, October 25th at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

Katie is the 17 year-old daughter of Joseph & Debbie McAndrew of Brockway. Katie is currently a senior at Brockway Area High School and is very active in horse, leadership, and community service projects in not only her 4-H club, but the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council as well! Katie is currently busy preparing to show four horses at the state horse next month.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2009 Pennsylvania State 4-H Council! Think you have what is takes to serve on the council? If so, here are a few eligibility requirements:

4-H member must be at least 16-years-old by January 1, 2009

It is recommended that, if possible, the applicant was a member of your County Council Program.

It is also recommended that the applicant have some leadership experience beyond the county-level (Regional Teen Retreats, Camp, State Leadership Conference, State Achievement Days, Capital Days, etc...)

In addition to a completed application, potential delegates will also have to complete an interview with the selection committee and conduct a presentation (topic to be announced).

Competitors Meet the Challenge of the 4-H State Competitive Trail Ride

The 2008 PA 4-H State Competitive Trail Ride, known as "The Keystone Ride", was held on September 19-20, 2008 in Bald Eagle State Forest. 4-H members, leaders, family and friends arrived with their horses early Friday, September 19th, went through pre-ride inspections and prepared to participate in the competitive trail ride on Saturday the 20th. The 2008 Keystone Ride had participants from Bedford, Blair, Clearfield, Lancaster, Jefferson and Wyoming counties.

Competitive trail riding takes place on well-marked trails at a timed pace. Judges observe the ride, inspecting the horses before and after the competition. The ride is not a race against time. Scoring is based on the overall condition of the horse, with points subtracted for any changes in their horse’s condition.

The ride offers high point awards in three divisions. This year's winners were: High Point 4-H Jr. Rider –Megan Oliver, Wyoming County; High Point 4-H Senior Rider – Shalise Gallaher; Clearfield County, High Point Adult Rider- Chandra Whipp, Bedford County.

Blue Seal Feeds, Inc. generously donated awards for the top three high point winners in each division. A bag of Sunshine Plus conditioning supplement was donated for the high point winners, and a tub of E-Z Hoof supplement was donated for the second and third place high point winners.

Division Winners:
Division A - Jr. Riding Ponies: First – Cassity Brennan, Bedford, Second – Victoria Ward, Bedford; Third – Alyssa Keefer, Lancaster; Fourth –Mikayla Ishman, Jefferson.

Division B - Sr. Riding Ponies: First –Leslie Weller, Lancaster; Second –Ayrian Talbert, Bedford, Third – Nicole Miller, Bedford.

Division C - Jr. Riding Horses: First – Megan Oliver-Wyoming; Second—Frances McAninch, Clearfield; Third—Tanner Shipley.

Division D - Sr. Riding Horses: First – Shalise Gallaher, Clearfield; Second—Lauren Myers; Lancaster Third—Ashley Pletcher, Blair.

Division E - Adult/Leader Light Weight: First –Chris Ward, Bedford; Second – Jenny Shipley, Bedford; Third – Danielle Foust, Wyoming.

Division F - Adult/Leader Heavy Weight: First – Chandra Whipp, Bedford; Second – Cynthia Weller, Lancaster; Third – Cindie Reitz, Jefferson; Fourth—Connie Oliver, Wyoming; Fifth –Jennifer Harper, Lancaster; Sixth—Lauren Carpenter, Bedford.

The ride also offers horsemanship awards for each youth division. The horsemanship division is judged on overall care and handling of the horse or pony before, during and after the competitive trail ride. This year’s winners in the Junior Division: First—Alyssa Keefer, Lancaster; Second—Megan Oliver, Wyoming; Third—Frances McAninch, Clearfield. In the Senior Division: First—Lauren Myers, Lancaster: Second—Nicole Miller, Bedford; Third—Ashley Pletcher, Blair.

This ride is an annual event coordinated by Patricia Comerford and Andrea Graeff. Mr. Richard Ely, from Somerset County serves as the volunteer leader for the event. Dr. Scott McAllister, Centre Equine Practice, served as the vet judge for the ride, Mrs. Jennifer Zajaczkowski served as the lay judge, and Mrs. Helene McKernan served as the horsemanship judge. Mrs. Kathy Fye of Centre County served as official timer for the event. Additional help for the ride is provided by PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry, local competitive trail riders: Millie Turner and Patty Lambert, members of the Nittany Amateur Radio Club, Penn State Animal Science 327 students, CHAPS of Penn State and many local volunteers.

“Clearfield County is very proud of the two 4-H members they sent to this year’s event. They are newcomers to this event and placed extremely high for their first year.” Jana Lynne Davidson, Children & Youth Development Educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension of Clearfield County. Shalise Gallaher who took home top honors is the 17 year old daughter of Dave & Rhonda Gallaher, Jr. of Grampian. Shalise is an active member of the Cowboy Up 4-H Club and also the Clearfield County 4-HTeen Council. Frances McAninch of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club was recognized not only for her accomplishments in the trail ride, but for her outstanding horsemanship skills as well. Frances is the 13 year old daughter of Dan & Phyllis McAninch of DuBois.

The Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus, played host to over 700 4-H members from across Pennsylvania for the annual 64th 4-H State Achievement Days from August 5-7, 2008.

Each 4-H member participated in one of the 25 events offered at 4-H State Achievement Days. The events range from Public Speaking and Physical Fitness to Horse judging and “The Apprentice”. The participants also worked on several service learning projects gear towards helping local non-profit agencies as well as supporting our military personnel.

Ten Clearfield County 4-H teens took part in this year’s event in four different events.

Clearfield County’s Horse Bowl Team received third place. Members of the Horse Bowl Team included Amanda Owens of the Clearfield Area 4-H Horse & Pony Club, who was named as the third place individual and honored with a blue merit award. Yvonne Bush of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club took eighth place as an individual and received a red merit award. Jenifer McAndrew of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club placed ninth as an individual and received a red merit, and Shalise Gallaher of the Cowboy Up 4-H Club was awarded a red merit award.

Katie McAndrew Bush of the Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club received a white merit award for her participation in the Horse Judging Senior Division Individual event.

Clearfield County’s Rabbit & Cavy Bowl Team came in third place. Participants Devon Turner received a red merit award and Morgan Turner received a white merit award.

John ”JR” McMahon of the Clearfield County 4-H Top Guns took home fourth place as an individual in the Shotgun Junior Division Contest and was awarded a blue merit award, while Derek Southern, also of the Clearfield County 4-H Top Guns received a red merit award.

Clearfield County 4-H youth where accompanied by Jana Davidson, 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension of Clearfield County.

“This annual event is held to demonstrate achievement of 4-H members and provide recognition of their accomplishments. Such events provide youth with educational opportunities to develop self-confidence, increase skills in project work, increase skills in decision making, and develop high standards,” says Phil Hoy, youth program management coordinator in Penn State's department of agricultural and extension education.

“4-H State Achievement is one of several opportunities for Pennsylvania’s youth to demonstrate the knowledge they have learned through the 4-H program,” states Christy Bartley, state 4-H program leader. “4-H members participate in other state and national events during the program year.”

LEAH J.CARR - 2008 Recipient of the Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship

This year’s Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship recipient is Leah Carr. Leah is a member of the Graham Township 4-H Club. Throughout her ten years as a Clearfield County 4-H member, Leah has completed numerous vegetable projects, entering over thirty different kinds of vegetables in the Clearfield County Fair including corn carrots, potatoes, lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, endive, onions, cabbage, squash, peas and beans. At the fair, Leah has been awarded the Best 4-H Vegetable Exhibit Award in 2005 & 2006. In addition to her 4-H experiences at the fair, Leah was crowned the 2008 Clearfield County Fair Queen.

In her 4-H club, Leah has held the offices of vice-president, secretary and is currently serving as president for the fourth consecutive year. Leah has taken part in 4-H public speaking contests and numerous community service efforts through her 4-H club. Her favorite 4-H experience is attending the Clearfield County Fair’s 4-H & FFA Awards Ceremony each year and seeing the youth recognized for their achievements.

Leah credits her experience in the 4-H program with having a huge impact on her life. 4-H taught her the importance of agriculture and has influenced her career choice, as she plans to continue to learn more about agriculture and educate others of agriculture’s importance in their life.

Leah is a 2008 graduate of West Branch Area High School. Leah is 18 year old daughter of Robert & Holly Carr of Morrisdale. Leah is currently a freshman at Penn State University – DuBois Campus majoring in business with a minor in agricultural business. Leah received a scholarship in the amount of $250.00.

The Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship is open to all 4-H members that are graduating seniors entering in a two or four year post high school curriculum. Applications are available at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office and the deadline to apply each year is August 1st. Mr. Greene is a former 30 year leader of the Harmony 4-H Club, who had a true passion to educate and help the 4-H youth understand their true potential.

4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest Results

On Tuesday, June 3rd at 6:30 p.m. Clearfield County hosted the 17th Annual Bi-County 4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest in the Hiller Auditorium of Penn State University – DuBois Campus. The event was open to all Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson County 4-H members, ages 8 through 18, as of January 1st. 11 youth members from Clearfield & Jefferson Counties participated in four categories, including Senior Division Public Speaking, Junior Division Public Speaking, Senior Division Presentations, & Junior Division Presentations.

This year, topics included how to raise kittens, hiking preparation, summer cooking, the Clearfield County Fair, peer pressure, gerbils, understanding the present through stories of the past, and the positive influence of the 4-H program. Individuals entering into the Public Speaking contest where asked to give a 4 to 7 minute original talk on any topic. Participants in this category were only allowed to use note cards; no other illustrative material was allowed to be used. Individuals entering into the Presentation contest where asked to conduct a presentation about a 4-H project, hobby, or activity they have been involved with. Junior Division participants were given up to 8 minutes for their presentation and Senior Division participants were given between 10 and 12 minutes for their presentation.

In the Public Speaking Senior Division competition, Rachel Syktich, a member of the Clearfield County 4-H Dairy Club, received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Rachel is the daughter of Paul & Jackie Syktich of DuBois. Second place honors went to Abby Dressler of the Open Range 4-H Club, who received a $15.00 monetary award. Abby is the daughter of Michael & Tania Dressler of Rockton. Chelsea Folmar received third place and a $10.00 monetary award. Chelsea is the daughter of Scott & Crystal Folmar of Luthersburg.

In the Senior Division Presentation competition, Kathleen Thomas of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club received first place and a monetary award of $20.00. Kathleen is the daughter of Pamela Thomas of Morrisdale.

In the Public Speaking Junior Division Contest, Megan McGarry of the Hepburnia Methodist 4-H Club received first place. Megan is the daughter of Chris and Holly McGarry of Grampian.

In the Junior Division Presentation Contest, Kimberly Ward of the Free Spirit 4-H Club took home first place. Kimberly is the daughter of Shawn & Laurie Ward of Morrisdale. Second place went to the team of Mary Betts & Jared Turner, both of the Free Spirit 4-H Club. Mary is the daughter of Dan & Sue Betts of Hawk Run and Jared is the son of Alan & Michelle Turner of Morrisdale. Kestrel Merritt, also of the Free Spirit 4-H Club, took home third place. Kestrel is the daughter of Sara Merritt of Morrisdale. Amberley Spicher of the Gateway 4-H Club received fourth place honors. Amberley is the daughter of Marty & Sherri Spicher of Punxsutawney. Each junior division participant received a 4-H messenger or duffle bag.

All participants received a certificate of achievement and a ribbon.

Two local individuals served as judges for this year’s contest. Judges for event included Bob E. Day. Mr. Day has worked with radio for over 40 years and is currently employed with WOKW of Clearfield. Also serving as a judge was Kristin Mosch of Clearfield. Kristin was a former 4-H member that participated in numerous 4-H Public Speaking opportunities throughout her 11 year membership. She currently works as a legal secretary for the Law Offices of Belin, Kubista, & Ryan of Clearfield.

Back in the swing of things!!!!!

It just occured to me that I haven't posted to my blog in a few weeks, so I wanted to check in with everyone!

I had a wonderful vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina the last week in May (I attached a few photos of my families adventures including hanging out at the beach and the aquarium)! Since I got back in the office, I have been very busy preparing for all the upcoming summer activities, specifically the animal shows. I am also taking a few evening classes at Penn State, so I am always on the go. Thanks for your patience in my absence!

Anyway, I can't believe it is already mid-June and you know what that means - it is off the 4-H camp this coming week and the Clearfield County Fair will be right around the corner!

On another personal note, I am gearing up for my daughter Lauren's 2nd birthday, which will take place on June 19. I can't believe she is 2 already!!!

Livestock News & Reminders

Small Animal Registration Forms are now available. if you are planning to exhbiti and sell swine, sheep, goats, poultry, or rabbits, these forms are due to the Extension Office by Monday, June 2, 2008 (since June 1st falls on a Sunday).
The Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club and the Kerr Family are hosting a hoof trimming for cattle to be shown at the Clearfield County Fair. It will be held at Mike and Paul Kerr’s Farm on Sunday, June 22, 2008 starting at noon. Cost will be per animal, determined by the number of animals participating. Dr. Wise has also agreed to visit the farm to perform the required pre-fair vet check. This will begin at 1:00 p.m. All 4-H & FFA members showing cattle at the fair are invited to attend. Please RSVP by contacting Michele Moyer if you are planning to attend at 765-2075. Please note - all hoof trimming fees must be paid on that day!
Please make sure you are up-to-date with your Ethics & Meat Quality Assurance Training. Please see the 2 dates the program is offered (May 22 in Clearfield & June 11 in DuBois) and plan to attend if needed. Pre-registration is required.
Veterinarian Visits with Dr. Wise will be on Monday, July 7, 2008. All 4-H & FFA members that register their animal by June 2nd will receive direct correspondence about this and other important information. The 4-H & FFA Jr. Livestock Sale Policy Brochure has been updated and will be mailed directly to all that register livestock by June 2nd.
Clearfield County Fair 2008 Premium Books are available. If you didn’t get one by mail, stop in the Fair Office or Extension Office to pick one up. Also, remember to use the 4-part form (submitting the white part to the Fair Office and the Yellow to the Extension Office). Last day to register with the Fair is Friday, July 18, 2008. Poultry and rabbits going to the slaughter should not be registered with the fair, but all other animals should in order to be eligible for premiums.
Penn State will onece again offer a Dairy Cow Camp May 30 - June 1, 2008 and a Beef Cow Camp June 22 - June 26, 2008 - Read more about these events in the current newsletter.

This year’s Penn State 4-H Achievement Days will take place on Tuesday, August 5 through Thursday, August 7, 2008. A complete list of all the events and contests offered this year are listed below. The final deadline to register with the Extension Office is Friday July 10th; however, please notice the price breakdowns for registration, which are as follows:

Late - $100.00 per person (register July 2 through July 10) - Your cost $75.00

All full-time participants (attending all three days) will get a $35.00 scholarship from the Clearfield County 4-H Development Committee and all part-time participants (attending for your competition day only) will receive a $25.00 scholarship from the Clearfield County 4-H Development Committee.

Central PA Rodeo

Is your 4-H club looking for a group outing or fundraising opportunity????

The Central PA Rodeo may be the answer for you! The rodeo, which is being hosted by the St. Matthew School of Tyrone will take place at the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds on these 3 dates:

Friday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 21 @ 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m.

**Gates open 3 hours before the start of the event!

You will have the opportunity to see 150 head of bucking horses, 50 head of bucking bulls, and heards of cows and steer, with events like barrel racing, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and much more. This rodeo is produced by the Rawhide Rodeo Company of Leicester, New York.

If looking for a group outing option, prices for groups of 20 or more are: $8.00 for 14 & older, $2.00 for 4 to 12 year olds, and free for children 3 years of age and under. Group tickets must be ordered by June 15th! The group coordinator gets a free ticket! Also, you can do a fundraising option and earn a $1.00 for every ticket sold. Now overhead fees, no out of pocket cash, and no requirement on the number of tickets sold.

4-H Day at Kennywood

This year, Kennywood Amusement Park of West Mifflin, PA will be hosting a 4-H Day on Friday, June 20, 2008.

You’ll have to the chance to meet other 4-H members from across the state and experience a new dark ride at Kennywood called “Ghostwood Estate,” which is an 8 room haunted house that replaced the Gold Rusher.

The advanced purchase of the of Fun Day Passes at the 4-H group rate is $19.00 each (The Normal Gate Price is $32.00); however, you must order tickets in advance to take advantage of the $13.00 reduced rate. Discount tickets will not be sold after June 13! Children ages 2 and under are admitted free. Tickets may be received on consignment or paid in advanced by check or money order. To order tickets, please complete the ticket order form attached to the recent newsletter.

4-H Public Speaking & Presentation Contest - June 3

The 17th Annual 4-H Public Speaking and Presentation Contest will take place on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 in the Auditorium & Quiet Lounge of the Hiller Building at Penn State University, DuBois Campus. Please note that the range of topics is unlimited – You can speak on anything that interests you!

Registration will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the contest will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. All 4-H members from Clearfield, Jefferson, Elk, and Cameron Counties are invited and encouraged to attend. Special awards will be given to the first, second, and third place Senior Division Contest participants and certificates and special prizes will be given to all Junior Division Contest participants. Refreshments will also be provided. For a complete list of rules and to sign-up for this event, please see the registration form attached to the recent 4-H newsletter or contact the Extension Office. The registration deadline is Friday, May 23, 2008.

Congratulations 4-H Window Display Winners

Our office received 9 outstanding window display submissions this year. These displays were set-up during PA 4-H Awareness Week, March 16th through March 22nd. A panel of three judges selected this year’s winners, which are as follows:

First Place: Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club, which chose a treasure inspired theme based on “4-H - More than You Could Ever Imagine” at Senator Wozniak’s Office in Philipsburg

Second Place: Town & Country 4-H Horse and Pony Club, which chose the theme “4-H - More than You Could Ever Imagine” and put their display up at Keith Brothers in Brockway

Third Place: Clearfield County 4-H Beef Club had their display at Clearfield Pharmacy around the theme “4-H - More than You Could Ever Imagine”

Fourth Place: Clearfield Area 4-H Horse & Pony Club had their display at Zalno’s Jewelers of Clearfield and chose the theme “Do the Math – 4-H Makes it Happen”

Fifth Place: Free Spirit 4-H Club, which chose “4-H Makes it Happen” and had their display at JJ Powell Co. in Clearfield

Photos of the top five window display are in the current issue of the 4-H newsletter! In addition to that our 4-H Clover Day Fundraising efforts were a huge success and we made over $2,000. At our 4-H Kick-off Skating Party we also collected and donated 2 large boxes of canned goods and non-perishable food items, which were donated to our local Food Bank.
